Simple & Delicious Buttermilk Scones
Don't fancy yourself a baker? Then this recipe is for you. Buttermilk scones might sound fancy, but this version is as simple as they come. We try to bake an item with our four-year-old son Keegan at least once a week, and this was one of the first recipes he helped us measure out and cut. This recipe is for a basic scone, but once you perfect it you can add dried fruit, chocolate, or spices to create your own version.
Ingredients
3 cups all-purpose organic flour
1/3 cup organic sugar
2 1/2 tsp. baking powder
1/2 tsp. baking soda
1 tsp. salt
3/4 cup organic grass fed butter
1 cup organic grass fed buttermilk
Organic cream for brushing on top
Directions
- Preheat oven to 400 degrees. Combine the flour, sugar, salt, baking powder and baking soda in a large bowl. Add butter and mix with your fingertips to a coarse meal.
- Add buttermilk and mix with a fork just until combined. Try to not overwork the mix as this will make it hard and flat during cooking.
- Gather the mix together in the bowl and turn out to a floured board. Shape the mix evenly with your hands and pat to top to level it (the dough should be rectangle shaped and 1” thick)
- Cut into wedges and place slightly separated on a greased baking sheet. Brush the tops with the cream, and bake for 15 minutes, or until lightly browned. Serve warm.
